Plans Revised!

Hey everybody.  Ben and I have been doing some talking, and we have come to a very important decision.  We've decided to put The Brightside on a short hiatus while we finish up our semesters at our respective universities and do a little traveling as well.  Be sure to keep checking back here every once in a while though, cuz we're still going to be posting some random things up here that we feel like sharing.  It won't always be on wednesday though, it might just be a random post while we're "studying."  Anyways, we'll give you all one website to procrastinate with.

I made an account on here and now, I tend to just play a ton of games trying to win tokens when I should be studying.  Highly recommended to kill some time between finals, or over the summer when you're really bored.  It's free to make an account by the way and they don't send you junk e-mails either.

Check out the poll -> over there -> as well.  And leave some comments telling us what you think of it so far!  E-mail us with some cool stuff you find and we'll throw it up here.  Thanks a lot everybody, and remember to look on The Brightside, summer is upon us!

Oh and the answers to last week's riddles are a towel, a nose, a stamp, a sponge, and a coffin.

Brightside Out!

Issue #8

Hey everyone.  This issue is going to be a little lackluster, well not really.  There isn't going to be a column this week due to us being kind of busy with this whole life thing.  Everything else should be there though.  Also, we will be taking a break from The Brightside in a couple more issues, so we will go up to Issue #10 and then take a small break while we go and take care of some other things that we need to do.  We're sure you'll be fine without us.  Anyways, it'll be summer for most of you by then, so you won't want to sit inside and read this.  That's about all we have for you here, read on!

Column

No column this week, sorry!  We'll replace it with some riddles instead that you can mull over:

~What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?

~I can run but not walk.  Wherever I go, thought follows close behind.  What am I?

~What goes around the world, but stays in a corner?

~I have holes in my top and bottom, my left and right, and in the middle, but I still hold water.  What am I?

~The man who invented it doesn't want it.  The man who bought it doesn't need it.  The man who needs it doesn't know it.  What is it?

We'll reveal the answers in next weeks issue.  Think you know the answers?  Write them in the comment's section below, and be sure to tell us if you would want a permanent riddles section in the newsletter.

Issue #7

Yes, we know, it's a little late.  We apologize, but we have a confession to make actually.  You see, Ben and I have been talking, and through the miracle that is an everyday conversation, we both discovered that we both have lives.  Well, I don't, but he does.  So we apologize in advanced if you are sitting on the edge of your seat throughout Wednesday, refreshing The Brightside page to no avail, but there may be some times where it might come out a little later than other times.  That is the end of my rant.  John D'Alessandro, that was for you.  Oh and just to let you all know, you can click on the songs of the week if you have never heard them before and it will take you to a recording of it to listen to.  Happy Wednesday, read on!

The Forgotten Fort
By Galen

I know that I'm not alone when I say that I used to build forts when I was younger.  Everyone used to build forts, be it out of the sheets off your bed, the pillows from your couch, or the snow from outside, you would be sure to construct something that you and your friends could hang out in.  I once made a fort in my room that basically covered the entire floor, which means I basically put another ceiling between me and the real ceiling, but it was a bed sheet, which makes it only a million times cooler.  I escorted my parents into my room to show them my work and reveal my plan to spend the night sleeping under a bed sheet that is stretched across my room.  They smile, pat me on the head, and say if they hear a crashing sound in the middle of the night, they'll know what it is.  See, I used various weighted objects to hold the sheets in place, namely a couple of lamps, some piles of heavy books, and other things I could find lying around the house.  Needless to say, I then decided I had enjoyed my fort for as long as was necessary; I didn't want to sleep on the floor anyways.  I'm sharing this all with you for one simple reason.  I miss building forts when I was little.  Being young and having the ability to have fun with just about anything you could find (be it bed sheets and weights or matches and a small flame, but that's a story for another time, or never) is something that I wish I was still able to do, but it seems as if time is gradually stealing my creative juices from me.  So I am calling upon all of our readers to take a trip back and at least reminisce about the simplicities of being a kid.  Think about all the crazy stuff you used to do, and if you're up to it, go and do some of that stuff again!  Now if you'll excuse me, I believe I have a fort to finish building.  And no, girls aren't allowed, sorry.

Exploring the Amazon
By Ben

Today, I was doing my usual rounds perusing the internet when I came upon the most exciting section of Amazon.com.  In the past I have used Amazon to buy and sell textbooks, as well as a few other things.  Little did I know that Amazon also sells a wide range of other more interesting items.  My journey through Amazon.com started at the page where you can buy 1,500 ladybugs for a mere $12.99.  This struck me as strange, but the gardening aspect of ladybugs allowed me to let it pass without thinking it too strange.  When I was scrolling back up the page though, I noticed the different tags that the product had received; the one that struck me was the "wtf" tag.  I promptly clicked the tag and started looking at the other products that had been labeled "wtf."  These I will share with you right now (my favorites anyways).
The first product on the list is "BIRTH CONTROL IS SINFUL IN THE CHRISTIAN MARRIAGES and also ROBBING GOD OF PRIESTHOOD CHILDREN!!" and yes, it is all in caps (except the "and also."  Why?  I don't know).  The most striking thing about the product is the fact that it is selling for $135 or the los used price of $87.95.  Another favorite of mine is the "Deer Rear."  Yes, it actually is the rear end of a deer (currently unavailable).  "Knitting With Dog Hair: Better A Sweater From A Dog You Know and Love than from a Sheep You'll Never Meet (Paperback)" is $13.67.  If you have the cash, the Relaxman Relxation Capsule is only $39,995, and $14 will buy you a six pack of black toilet paper.
The related tag "amazon oddities" brought up similar results including; Uranium Ore ($29.95), a 10 x 18 wedding chapel ($21,420.47), inflatable 'party' sheep ($10.49), color for the hair 'down there' ($14.99 in a variety of colors), and finally, the Borat Mankini Swimsuit Costume Suspender Thong Green ($11.99).  I strongly encourage everyone to go to Amazon and check out the offerings that it displays.  Be sure to let us know if you actually buy anything off the list.  Click here to visit Amazon's "wtf" tag page.

The Week as a Theme Park
By Galen

As most of my friends know, I tend to have an unhealthy obsession with theme parks.  To put this into perspective for those of you who don't know me, my dad and I once drove twelve hours so that we could ride the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world.  This ride lasts for a whole eight seconds.  Don't get me wrong, it was completely worth it, but it just seems those numbers are a little uneven.  Anyways, I decided that this week, it would be interesting to compare college life to a theme park, don't ask me why, just roll with it.  We'll start off with Monday and Tuesday.  These will become known as the Merry-Go-Round from now on basically because they're the worst days of the week.  However, there always seems to be a couple of nuts out there that enjoy these days, even though they're the same wherever you go.  Next we have Wednesday, which we'll compare to that scrambled egg ride where you and your friends fight for the inside seat so you're not the one getting crushed when it whips you to the outside.  I make this comparison because wednesday is known as hump day to many people, it's like the inside of the scrambled egg ride, a short break right before it whips you back around just to get crushed again by the rest of the week.  Thursday and Friday are going to be the log flume.  Thursday is that hesitant ride to the top of the lift hill while the whole time, you know what waits on the other side, and Friday is that exhilarating drop down into the water where the weekend washes over you in one fell swoop.  Then there's the weekend; can you guess what that's gonna be?  Yea, you know it.  The roller coaster.  It's different for everyone so it's hard to say why, but one thing is for sure; the weekend always has it's ups and downs, ending with that slow decent into the station, still excited from the weekend but being able to rely on homework to slow you down.  Then you go ride the merry-go-round again because the roller coaster made you nearly throw up...

When, if at all, do you think the limitations on theme park rides will be reached?  I mean, they can't keep building them taller all the time, can they?
